Nanda Biography
Nanda was born on January 8, 1939, to a Marathi-speaking family in Bombay. Her dad was actor Master Vinayak, and mom's name was Meenaxi. She has two brothers and a sister, who married into the Sindhi-speaking Gurbaxani family. She has a niece named Geeta. She is the great-niece of film-maker V. Shantaram, who fathered yesteryear actress Rajshri.
Her dad passed away when she was just 8 years old, and the family had to depend on her income, so she started acting on the silver screen as Baby Nanda. She went on to play character and 'sister' roles, which did get her some recognition, especially after the release of 'Bhabhi' and 'Chhoti Bahen'. She then went to star as the leading lady in 1961 in 'Hum Dono'. Thereafter she acted as a leading lady in many movies with 'Shor (1972) being the last one with Manoj Kumar. She did make a come-back in the 80s to act in 3 movies 'Prem Rog', 'Ahista Ahista', and 'Mazdoor'. In all 3 movies she played the mother of actress Padmini Kolhapure.
As a result of her involvement in movies, her studies suffered, and she was coached at home by a school-teacher, Gokuldas Makhi.
Very shy and almost introvert, Nanda kept to herself, and did not have any relationship. Even when cajoled by her brothers, and Waheeda, she refused to marry. Waheeda did convince her to marry film-maker Manmohan Desai, an engagement took place, but before the wedding could take place, Manmohan passed away
Today, surrounded by only close friends and family, she lives a plush & comfortable life in her sea-facing bungalow in Bombay.
